Zane leads us along a ridgeline, his powerful black wings skillfully dancing with the breeze. I wish I was half as graceful as he is in the air.

He’s leading us to his clan’s home. When Seth asked him, he didn’t even hesitate, though I know it’s difficult for him. For most people, 300 years is a long time past. For Zane, it feels like only a matter of months.

He dives around a corner and disappears. I follow more slowly and discover a large cave tucked into the cliff face with a long, high ridge out front to allow for easy access. Seth’s right behind me, his fiery body bright as he dives down, landing beside me on the edge of the cave. The roof dips a bit further into the cave, and it’s too dark to see anything. Zane has disappeared somewhere into the darkness.

Staying in dragon form, I duck my head low and poke my long neck into the cave proper, trying to find Zane. The low roof of the cave smoothes out into a massive cavern inside the rock. An enormous circular cliff edge opens into a deep crevice below. It’s so big it takes my breath away. I shuffle my body under the dip in the roof of the cave and am rewarded when I come out into the deep cavern behind it.

How is this possible? asks Seth in awe.

I don’t know, but it’s amazing.

I look down over the lip of the cavern and see Zane far below, walking around slowly, still in his dragon form. There’s more than enough space for his enormous body.

Should we go down there? Seth is peering down at Zane.

I think we should give him some time first. I don’t know if he’s been back here since he was captured.

This place is amazing. Seth’s voice is filled with genuine awe. He’s right. This cavern is pretty much a perfect space for creatures like us.

Zane looks up and gestures that we should join him, so we both leap off the edge of the cliff and glide down, past multiple holes in the rock walls that are presumably other rooms for the dragons who lived here.

Zane’s eyes are flashing with fire, like he’s only just holding himself together.

You okay? I ask.

He nods. It’s just that it’s so quiet. So empty. It was never like this in my time.

Perhaps we can make it like that again? I ask, without really meaning to. But my dragon self feels so at home here, it’s hard not to fall in love with it.

Perhaps.

Zane’s expression is shuttered, and I can’t tell if he’s annoyed that I would be so bold.

How many dragons lived here? asks Seth.

Usually around twenty to thirty families. No more than a hundred people, maybe a few more when more baby dragons were born than usual.

How did the young get around in a place like this? Before they changed? I can’t imagine how anyone but supers who could fly could live here.

Internal staircases travel all up the sides of the rooms.
